Joni’s Story

State Representative Joni Jenkins

Joni Jenkins was elected as the State Representative for Kentucky’s 44th District in 1995.  She has served as Chair of the House Women’s Caucus, Chair of the Jefferson County Delegation, and Chair of the House Licensing and Occupations Committee.

She currently serves on the following committees:

  • Health and Family Services
  • Economic Development and Workforce Investment
  • Medicaid Oversight
  • Child Welfare

In addition to her legislative position, Rep. Jenkins directs the HealthCareers Pathways Program at the Jefferson Community and Technical College in Louisville, Kentucky.  This program recruits “at-risk” students into Allied Health and Nursing Programs and provides intensive education case management to assist the students in overcoming barriers to graduation and job placement.

Much of Rep. Jenkins’ background has been in the area of Violence Against Women prevention.  She created and directed P.E.A.C.C. (Prevention, Education, Advocacy on Campus and in the Community) at the University of Louisville.  She managed the professional training and public education programs at the Center for Women and Families in Louisville, Kentucky; a domestic violence shelter and rape crisis program.

Representative Jenkins serves on the following boards:

  • Brooklawn Children Services
  • Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare Foundation Board
  • Children Who Witness Domestic Violence Committee, Co-Chair

Rep. Jenkins is a member of the 2008 Toll Leadership Class, Council of State Governments.  She has been recognized for her legislative work in recent sessions by the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs, the Kentucky Humane Society, the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, The River City chapter of Business and Professional Women, The Jefferson County Teachers Association, the Metro Louisville Disabilities Coalition and American Cancer Society.

Rep. Jenkins volunteers weekly in the Every1Reads program and the Brooklawn tutoring program and was a co-chair for the 2008 Louisville Metro Drop-Out Summit.

Rep. Jenkins is a graduate of the University of Kentucky, College of Communications, School of Journalism.
